Described by one gig-goer as "Bat for Lashes making out with Bruce Springsteen at a drive in movie", the unlikely combination of a Sydney singer-songwriter and underground hip hop producer forms the basis of brand new, Sydney synth-pop act, We are the Brave.
Despite their musical backgrounds, this oddly matched, multi-instrumentalist pair have found common ground in their mutual love of 80s pop classics, 90s sci-fi, vintage synths and Aussie rock, looking to artists such as David Bowie, Kate Bush, Talking Heads and The Fixx to inspire a sound and aesthetic that is retrospective, but still their own.
Vintage drum machines, warm analogue sounds and post-punk guitar riffs pay homage to decades gone by, with catchy pop hooks disguising darker-than-they-appear lyrics. As front woman, songstress/co-producer Jess Chalker's fierce, commanding vocals channel the clarity and primality of chanteuses like Caroline Polachek (Chairlift) and Annie Lennox, with the hip-hop sensibility and musicianship of producer OXY completing the mix.
With a self-recorded/engineered debut EP slated for a May/June release, We are the Brave is a promising, talked-about new live act to check out on the Sydney scene over the coming months. Already gearing up for a busy 2013 ahead, the future looks bright for this talented duo.
